How to Format a Flash Memory Card

How to Re-Format a 2GB SD or MMC Flash Memory Card:

Some device models may require that the card be re-formatted before it can be used. If you get an error message such as "Card Not Formatted" or "Memory Card Corrupt" after inserting the card into your device you may need to re-format the card.

The re-formatting process is simple. It is highly recommended that the format process take place on a Personal Computer, as opposed to formatting the card on your device.

First you will need a High Capacity USB 2.0 Card Reader capable of reading the MMC (Multi Media Card) and SD (Secure Digital) formats. If you do not have a High Capacity USB Card Reader, you may not be able to properly re-format the card. If this is the case you can purchase one from here.

Next follow the instructions below:
  1. Connect the included adapter onto the end of your memory card. This is required only for the Mini Card formats.
  2. Insert the card into your card reader.
  3. Plug your card reader into an available USB port on your computer.
  4. Wait for your system to find the USB Storage Device
  5. Open a "My Computer" window
  6. Right Click on the drive letter associated with your card reader.
  7. Select "Format" from the right click menu.
  8. A dialog box such as the one shown below will open. IMPORTANT… click the down arrow under the "File System" section of the dialog box and select "FAT" as the File System. DO NOT select FAT32 or NTSF.
  9. Under the "Format Options" section select the "Quick Format" option.
  10. Click on the "Start" button to begin the format process. Do not select any other options. When the format is complete close the format dialog box
WARNING ... formatting will destroy all data on the selected drive. Be absolutely certain you have selected the correct drive letter for your memory card. Choosing the wrong drive letter will result in loss of data and may make your system inoperable.

The re-format process is now complete.

IMPORTANT… Before you remove the card reader from the USB port you must stop the USB device or make certain that the computer has finished reading or writing to the card. Removing the card while the computer is accessing it can corrupt the data or the formatting on the card.
